Althea René is an acclaimed American soul-jazz flutist known for her dynamic performances and genre-blending compositions. Born on December 25 in Detroit, Michigan, she began playing the flute at the age of four and later studied classical music at Howard University. Inspired by her father, Dezie McCullers, a member of Motown’s original Funk Brothers. She made history in 2013 with her album In the Flow, whose title track became the first flute-featured single to reach No. 1 on both the Billboard and Smooth Jazz charts. Her discography includes albums such as Flawsome (2019), Unstoppable (2017), and Live in Detroit (2015), with notable songs like “Inner Circle,” “Barbara Mae,” “Gypsy Soul,” “Secret Smile,” and “Sunday Cruise.”
