Maria Smilios, “The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses who Helped Cure Tuberculosis" special guest Virginia Allen

Maria Smilios, author of “The Black Angels: The Untold Story of Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis” (2023) will discuss the heroic stories of the nurses who provided essential patient care at the height of the tuberculosis pandemic at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island in New York. With the promise of good pay and a better living environment, Black nurses relocated from the South beginning in the late 1920s to replace their white counterparts who left their roles.
They went on to occupy 250 of the 300 nursing positions, and these nurses became known as the Black Angels. Maria Smilios will be joined by Virginia Allen, one of the original Black Angels. Maria and Virginia will sign copies of the book after the event.
